Ginger Recipes: Masal Tea
Masala Tea (GFCF)
Masala tea is also known as chai tea. I learned this recipe for tea in India while studying Ayurvedic medicine. This tea is meant to be enjoyed on cool morning, like many of our Utah mornings now. All the spices in this tea are warming in nature and help ward off colds. To make the tea more spicy add more ginger.
Ingredients:
1 inch piece Cinnamon
1 inch piece fresh ginger finely grated
4 green Cardamom pods
3 whole cloves
2 Star anise
2 teaspoons Black tea powdered or black tea leaves
2 teaspoons sweetener (Raw cane sugar, honey, or stevia (adjust amount if using this))
1 ½ cup milk (can use raw cow or goat milk, or dairy alternative like unsweetened almond milk, rice milk or soy milk)
1 ½ cup water
Directions:
1. Blend cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and star anise together in a spice dedicated coffee grinder or crush with traditional mortar and pestle
2. Add crushed spices and black tea to sauce pan with water.
3. Add freshly grated ginger
4. Bring to boil and let simmer for 1-2 minutes
5. Add milk (or milk substitute) and heat to almost boil, cover turn heat off with lid on.
6. Strain and serve.
7. Add sweetener to desired taste
